This year marks 85 years since the first Koreans were deported to Kazakhstan from the Far East. In Kostanay, two collective farms "Samir" and "December 5" were formed from among them. At the same time, a cemetery appeared in the regional center, where the repressed Koreans were buried. Subsequently, graves of people of other nationalities appeared here. The cemetery was closed in 1965. It was next to him that a memorial stele appeared; it was erected by the forces of the regional Korean ethno-cultural association.
In addition to installing the stele, public figures landscaped the area around it. So, after laying flowers at the memorial, those present took part in the planting of forty seedlings of shrubs: lilacs, mountain ash and wild rose. They will grow next to the monument.
In the Kostanay region, nine burials have been identified that have suffered from political persecution. The Regional Commission for the Rehabilitation of Victims of Political Repressions makes a great contribution to the legalization of the lands on which the cemetery is located. Since the land was recognized as ownerless, it was repeatedly considered by the regional commission, and as a result of joint work with the local akimat, today we see such a concrete result.
