May 31 is officially observed in Kazakhstan as the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Political Repression and Famine. It is a day when we bow our heads in memory of the innocent ancestors who suffered and lost their lives. As part of the commemorative events, descendants of victims of political repression, together with staff members of the Project Office of the State Commission for the Full Rehabilitation of Victims of Political Repression, visited the Monument to the Victims of Famine in Astana. They also paid tribute at the historic Karaotkel Cemetery, where they honored the memory of the victims at gravestones and mass burial sites, offered prayers, and commemorated those who perished during one of the most tragic periods in the nation’s history. May 31 is not only a day of mourning but also a sacred occasion that strengthens national unity, reminds us of the lessons of history, and deepens our understanding of the immense price paid for Independence.
